Russia will establish a permanent naval base in the Syrian Tartus.

This was stated by State Secretary, Deputy Defense Minister Nikolai Pankov.

The corresponding documents are now prepared.

They are undergoing a procedure of interagency coordination ", - said Pankov in the Federation Council.

The base  of the Russian fleet in the port of Tartus was established in 1977.

It is the only such point of the Russian Navy in the Mediterranean Sea.

Earlier, Russian Defense Ministry reported that for the security of the naval base in Tartus will be carried out bye a battery of  S-300 anti-aircraft missile system.
