"We are at a unique historical moment where the ends of several cycles — historical, political, social, and seemingly climatic — are overlapping. Fundamental changes are happening before our eyes. But their meaning eludes us, obscured by details, trivialities, and fragments that cloud our vision.

There is a vivid story in Islamic eschatology. When the angels blow their trumpets, announcing the beginning of the Day of Judgment, no one will hear it, even though the roar will echo throughout the universe. Everyone will be engrossed in their daily affairs. Only one farmer, adjusting the saddle on his donkey, will accidentally turn his head so that one ear is directed towards the sky. He will hear it, run, and begin, waving his arms, to tell the others, 'The angels are blowing their trumpets! They are calling for the Day of Judgment!' But no one will listen to him. And then, the end will come for everyone and everything."
