The Dutch economy is very open and relies on international trade. The Netherlands is home to a number of large companies, including Royal Dutch Shell, ING Group and Rabobank.

The Netherlandsis a country with a history of neutrality. As a relatively small country, it generally pursues its foreign policy interests within the framework of multilateral organizations. It tries to find a balance between traditional trans-atlanticism (NATO) and Europe.
